LABORATORY INFORMATION

Table of Contents
 1. Laboratory Demonstrators
 2. General Lab Information
 3. Marking Scheme
 4. Acceptable Excuses for Missed Labs
 5. Penalties for Late Work
 6. Lab Schedule

1. Laboratory Demonstrators

Senior Lab Demonstrator: D. Vukmanic, Room E222
e-mail:    dvukman@chemiris.labs.BrockU.CA

Names of other laboratory demonstrators will be given during the first laboratory session.

Laboratory sections:  1 Monday 2:30 pm-5:30 pm
  2 Tuesday 2:30 pm-5:30 pm
  3 Wednesday 2:30 pm-5:30 pm
  4 Thursday 9:30 am-12:30 pm

2. General Lab Information

Location: Inniskillin Hall  305

Lab Manual: Chem 2P42 Lab Manual will be available from the bookstore at a nominal fee.

Lab Coat: Required for all labs. Lab coat can be purchased from the bookstore.

Safety Glasses:  Required for all labs. These can be purchased at the bookstore.

Locker Deposit:  Each student is assigned an individual locker. In order to obtain a locker key a $10 locker deposit must be paid to Chemistry Stores at the time of check-in.

Lab Notebook: This should be a hard cover book with numbered pages. Students are expected to maintain this book up-to-date at all times, with each experiment recorded in the form of introduction, experimental details, observations, results, calculations and discussion. The introduction to each experiment should be completed before coming to the lab to perform the experiment. Lab notebooks must be kept up to date and may be collected for marking at any time.

Informal Lab Reports: A photocopy of the completed lab report should be handed in one week after completion of the experiment along with the quantitative results sheet into the report box located across the hall from E222 and labeled with appropriate course and demonstrator name.

Formal Lab Reports: Students are required to complete one formal report. The report can be written on any experiment performed during the term, with the exception of Experiment 1. Formal report is due last week of classes (November 27 to December 4). Report format is outlined in the lab manual and will be described at lab check-in during first week.

Start Date: The first laboratory session will be held during the first week of classes.

Students will attend laboratories once a week, as per schedule given during the first week of labs. Except for the first experiment, all experiments are done on a rotational basis and will be done by students working in pairs. There is one common experiment and a total of six rotating experiments, some of which will take 2 weeks to complete.

3. Lab Marking Scheme (30 % of the course mark)

Mark Breakdown Lab Performance  5%
Lab Notebook   5%
Informal Labs  35%
Quantitative Results  35%
 Formal Lab  20%

Completion of all laboratories and submission of a completed lab notebook is required to obtain a passing grade in the course. Please note that for experiments done in pairs, each partner must complete her/his own lab report for submission to the demonstrator. Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated.

4. Missed Labs

A student may miss a lab ONLY as a result of illness or a death in the immediate family. In cases of illness a doctor’s certificate will be required as proof. In cases of the missed lab, arrangements must be made with the senior demonstrator to make up the lab at another time. Because of the rotating schedule of labs it is NOT possible for students to drop in to other lab sections to make up missed labs. Being late for the lab without prior explanation will be regarded as a missed lab.

5. Penalty for Late Work

It is department policy that late work is penalized 10% for each day that the lab is late. Remember that all of the labs must be completed and handed in to pass the course, therefore it is better to hand them in late rather than not handing them in at all.

6. Chem 2P42 Lab Schedule

All labs, with exception of Experiment 1, are done by partners, in rotation. The lab manual contains sufficient information for each student to successfully complete the lab. For each experiment, students must read the lab manual and prepare the introduction, the safety hazards and the point form procedure BEFORE coming to the lab. Labs run for three hours, and it is expected that students will complete all required work within this period.

Week 1:  Check-in.
Overview of experiments, lab notebook, informal lab reports and formal reports.
  Discussion of safe lab practices.
  Analytical techniques.

Week 2:  Calibration of Volumetric Glassware, Standardization of HCl and Statistical Analysis of Experimental Results.

Weeks 3-11:
The following experiments will be done in rotation:

 2.  Determination of % Ethanol in Wine. (Gas Chromatography)
 3.  Determination of Caffeine in Beverages (High Performance Liquid Chromatography-HPLC)
 4.  Potentiometric Acid Base Titration: Analysis of an Unknown Mixture Containing Carbonate and Bicarbonate.
 6.  Determination of Dissolved Oxygen in an Unknown Water Sample (Redox Titration).
 7.  Determination of Total Inorganic Phosphate in an Unknown Water Sample (Spectrometric Analysis).
 9.  Determination of Fluoride in Toothpaste or Drinking Water.

Students are expected to leave the lab clean and the lab equipment in good working order.
